"I Am the Starlight"

This song will be included in the EP, I Am the Starlight. CREDITS - This is one of the songs I recorded in the period 1991-92 with my friend Terry Hamilton. Terry also played bass guitar on this number. Synthesizer keyboardist and pianist is unknown. (Like all of our songs, it has been upgraded for audio quality for public release.)

Description of Song

This is a dramatic baritone and tenor duet in a Rock Broadway Musical style, using synthesized orchestra, bass guitar and piano accompaniment. It is the strong motivational number from the 2nd act of the musical, Starlight Express. This song is between the protagonist, Rusty, and the mythical Starlight Express, where Starlight appears in Runsty's mind and gives the advice that the Starlight Express is within Rusty. Just believe in yourself and you can do anything!

This song, "I Am the Starlight," combines two melodies from the musical. Namely, the act 1 closing number, "Starlight Express," that represents hope and magic, with the melody of "Only He" which occurs later in act 2, and represents self-discovery and fulfillment. It also appears as the culmination of the Overture, which is initially heard only as an interrupted motif at the beginning of the show. As in the overture, this number begins with the "Starlight Express" melody played by the musical instruments. It modulates and repeats multiple times, growing and getting louder. Rusty, using his last bit of hope, calls out "Starlight Express." Then at the peak of the introductory music, he is answered by The Starlight Express, who begins with "Only You have the Power within You".
